Dead Heat by Bronwyn Parry

What do you get with you mix Australian wilderness, a brooding detective and a strong, savvy parks ranger? Bronwyn Parry’s Dead Heat.

Loyal LOLB followers will know how much I love romantic suspense, especially books by the RITA Award winning Laura Griffin. When preparing to attend the Romance Writers of America conference last month, I investigated the other RITA Award for Romantic Suspense finalists and soon declared to the world: “I must buy Dead Heat at the conference book signing!”

And I did! And Dead Heat was the only book I put in my carry on the way home. THE ONLY ONE I NEEDED.

DeadHeat9780733630132National Park ranger Jo Lockwood is investigating a act of vandalism and discovers a dead body. When the details of the grisly crime are uncovered, Detective Nick Matheson is called in to investigate. As the case progresses, Jo becomes the only person left alive that can identify the killer. Nick’s interests in the case start to stray from professional to personal as he and Jo spend more and more time together.

The tension between the two main characters was as compelling as the tension driven by the mystery surrounding them. The threat on Jo’s life is a clear and present danger, yet she is still committed the land she’s sworn to protect. The criminals are ruthless, their evil beyond imagination, so Nick wants to do everything he can from allowing the killers to strike again.

The rustic beauty and the rugged danger of the Australian wilderness added a layer of realism that drew me even farther into the story. If you like mysteries with a mix of romance to heighten the suspense, try Dead Heat. I’m looking forward to reading Parry’s earlier novels–my favorite thing!!
